Murrayfield Stadium is the venue for the next event in our Scots Law Conference Series, exclusively available to delegates in person on the day.
We are delighted to welcome the recently appointed Law Commissioner, Ann Stewart of Shepherd & Wedderburn, as chair of our prestigious Annual Conveyancing Conference. A range of legal and practice-based topics will be provided by an expert panel of speakers, with a keynote session delivered by Professor Roddy Paisley of the University of Aberdeen on the most important case decided on positive prescription in the past thirty years.
Ann and Roddy will be joined by Adèle Nicol from Anderson Strathern, the Coal Authority's Lisa Conway & Michael Le Garignon, Malcolm Combe of University of Strathclyde, Matt Smith from Registers of Scotland and Chris Horsley from Burness Paull.
With over 100 attendees, early booking is strongly advised to secure your place.
Questions to be considered will include
- what may be the practical effect on tenants and landlords of the provisions outlined in the Housing (Scotland) Bill?
- what are the current issues being considered by the Scottish Law Commission?
- what is the effect of personal real burdens in land law?
- what should you expect if you are purchasing a property served by a district heating system?
- how do you submit a successful application for registration?
What's being covered?
Positive prescription – a practical case study
Professor Paisley will consider the implications of the most important, and least known, case dealing with positive prescription decided in the last 30 years – and its practical implications for all conveyancers.

Current projects at the Scottish Law Commission
In this session, Ann will provide an update on current Commission projects, in particular on heritable securities and tenement law, and outline the issues under consideration in her project on execution of documents.

Personal real burdens – usage and effect
Personal real burdens have been a feature of Scottish land law since 2004. This session will provide an update around their usage and effect, using the rural housing burden as a particular case study.

The Housing (Scotland) Bill 2024
The Bill is described as “setting out Scottish Government’s next steps on the path towards a fairer, well-regulated private rented sector which is good for both tenants and landlords and encourages investment”. This talk considers the mechanics of the Bill being used to achieve that aim and the practical effect on landlords and tenants.
Adèle Nicol, Anderson Strathern
Mineopoly – navigating the coalfields with confidence
In this presentation we will be exploring the Scottish coalfields and how integral the Coal Authority’s CON29M coal mining reports are in supporting customers to make confident decisions when buying a property.
Lisa Conway & Michael Le Garignon, The Coal Authority
How to submit a successful application
In this session Registers of Scotland’s senior policy advisor Matthew Smith will outline what is required to submit a successful application and how one can avoid rejection.

District heating systems
What are they? How are they (to be) regulated? What should you expect if you are purchasing a property served by a district heating system?
