Learn all about the procedural aspects of civil litigation in England and Wales.

Paralegals are increasingly being used by solicitors to carry out work which used to be seen as the exclusive province of qualified solicitors. By specialising in a particular area of practice they are often able to acquire, in the course of their work experience, expertise in their specialist field.

By specialising they are able to acquire that level of expertise in a comparatively short time and quickly become a financial asset to their firms. Increasingly, it is being recognised that legal training which runs alongside their legal practice will benefit paralegal staff and their employers.

This course is intended to provide you with a practical grounding in civil litigation. It attempts to fill some of the gaps in legal knowledge and practice which can occur when that knowledge is largely gained from doing the job. The aim of this course is not only to provide knowledge of the procedural steps which are taken in a case but also to provide a better understanding as to the reasons why such steps are taken.

What you'll learn:

  • Fundamental knowledge for litigators
  • Preliminary considerations
  • Early action on the case
  • Methods of dispute resolution
  • Commencement of proceedings and statements of case
  • Judgement in default and interim applications
  • Case management
  • Evidence: practice and procedure
  • Factual and expert evidence
  • Settlement and preparation for trial
