Our new conference, chaired by Lindsey Cartwright of Morton Fraser MacRoberts, will cover a range of topics from Issues for employers when employees are charged with criminal offences and disability discrimination to insolvency and freedom of expression in the workplace.
In addition to Lindsey's presentation on whistleblowing and interim relief, the conference will Include sessions from Alison Weatherhead of Dentons, Chris Phillips from Thorntons, Paman Singh of Weightmans, Amanda Buchanan from BTO and Alan Delaney of Morton Fraser MacRoberts.
Questions to be considered will include:
- what are the pitfalls for employers when their employees are reported for social media activity?
- how has the approach to defining disability changed?
- what happens to employees and their rights in insolvency situations?
- what should an employer do if an employee is charged with a criminal offence outside their employment?
What's being covered?
Freedom of expression on social media - the pitfalls for employers
There is a seemingly never-ending appetite for random social media users to wish to report posts to people's employers and encourage others to do so. This raises the question of when employers can and ought to intervene, when they should back off (or indeed stand up for free expression) and the risks of getting involved, particularly in relation to discrimination claims and the extra difficulties when it is colleague vs colleague complaints.

Insolvency essentials for employment lawyers
There are specific rules which apply where there is an administration or insolvency – this talk will cover the differences between insolvency and administration situations and what happens to employees and their rights.

Disability discrimination: overview and update for 2025
In this talk, Chris Phillips will provide a brief overview of how the law related to disability discrimination in the employment context has evolved since the introduction of the original legislation, nearly 30 years ago. He will then bring us up to date with some more recent developments and cases brought under the Equality Act, before looking forward to what we might expect under the Labour administration. This will include consideration of:
- how our approach to defining disability has changed
- the types of claims available under the 2010 Act
- the challenge of neurodiversity in the workplace
- practical considerations for clients and advisors
- future developments: the Employment Rights Bill and beyond.
Chris Phillips, Thorntons
